Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
