Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
